Review by Kathy Parsons
Love Songs" is yet another compilation of David Lanz's older material presented in an attractive new package (Lanz left Narada in 1998). Released in time for Valentine's Day 2001, it is somewhat ironic because Lanz has consciously avoided writing love songs for many years. With that said, this is an excellent collection of David's music going as far back as "Heartsounds", his debut album on Narada in 1983, and the most recent track being "London Blue" from "Songs From an English Garden" (1998). The only track that hasn't appeared on another album is "The Eyes of Amelia", which is a beautiful live recording made in a 1990 concert with Tingstad and Rumbel. If you are new to David Lanz' music, this is an outstanding collection of some of his best-known and best-loved pieces. Or, if you want to update some vinyl or cassette recordings to CD, this is an inexpensive means to bring things into the present. Longtime fans, however, will find only one "new" piece here, and it's eleven years old. Lanz is currently working on an album of all-new material, so new music is on its way!
